The game features an\u00a0open world<\/a>\u00a0environment, with elements of potential\u00a0stealth gaming<\/a>\u00a0and reputation-based social mechanics, and is set during a fictitious multi-national military action in\u00a0North Korea<\/a>. The player gains control of one of three mercenary\u00a0main characters<\/a>\u00a0and completes contracts in the war-torn country for profit and to prevent a nuclear war. Critics gave favorable reviews to the game, in particular praising its focus on explosive mayhem.<\/p>\n

A sequel,\u00a0Mercenaries 2: World in Flames<\/a><\/i>, was released in 2008 for\u00a0Microsoft Windows<\/a>,\u00a0PlayStation 2<\/a>,\u00a0PlayStation 3<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0Xbox 360<\/a>. Following Pandemic Studios’ closure in November 2009,\u00a0Electronic Arts<\/a>\u00a0hired\u00a0Danger Close Games<\/a>\u00a0to develop a second sequel, tentatively titled\u00a0Mercs Inc<\/a><\/i>.[<\/span>1]<\/span><\/a><\/sup>\u00a0The game was eventually canceled following the closure of\u00a0Danger Close Games<\/a>\u00a0in 2013.<\/p>\n
