First released in Europe and North America in March 2014 as the third installment in the\u00a0<i>Yoshi&#8217;s Island<\/i>\u00a0series,\u00a0<i>Yoshi&#8217;s New Island<\/i>\u00a0is a direct continuation of the events of the ending of the 1995\u00a0<a title=\"Super Nintendo Entertainment System\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Super_Nintendo_Entertainment_System\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Super Nintendo Entertainment System<\/a>\u00a0game\u00a0<i><a title=\"Yoshi&#039;s Island\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Yoshi%27s_Island\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Super Mario World 2: Yoshi&#8217;s Island<\/a><\/i>, and is set prior to the events of the 2006\u00a0<a title=\"Nintendo DS\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Nintendo_DS\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Nintendo DS<\/a>\u00a0title\u00a0<i><a title=\"Yoshi&#039;s Island DS\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Yoshi%27s_Island_DS\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Yoshi&#8217;s Island DS<\/a><\/i>.<\/p>\n<p>Much like that of the original\u00a0<i>Yoshi&#8217;s Island<\/i>,\u00a0<i>Yoshi&#8217;s New Island<\/i><span class=\"nowrap\">&#8216;<\/span>s\u00a0<a title=\"Gameplay\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Gameplay\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">gameplay<\/a>\u00a0revolves around using Yoshi&#8217;s abilities to safely transport Baby\u00a0<a title=\"Mario\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Mario\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Mario<\/a>\u00a0through a series of\u00a0<a title=\"Level (video games)\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Level_(video_games)\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">levels<\/a>\u00a0while escorting the infant across the island to\u00a0<a title=\"Luigi\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Luigi\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">his brother<\/a>. In addition to returning mechanics such as hovering, as well as laying and throwing eggs, Yoshi is occasionally able to create massive eggs known as Eggdozers, which can be used to clear paths and explore underwater areas. Moreover, certain levels feature a segment in which Yoshi is briefly transformed into an object or vehicle controlled with the console&#8217;s\u00a0<a title=\"Gyroscope\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Gyroscope\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">gyroscope<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>According to one of\u00a0<i>Yoshi&#8217;s New Island<\/i><span class=\"nowrap\">&#8216;<\/span>s producers,\u00a0<a title=\"Takashi Tezuka\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Takashi_Tezuka\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Takashi Tezuka<\/a>, a sequel to\u00a0<i>Yoshi&#8217;s Island<\/i>\u00a0was chosen rather than a follow-up to\u00a0<i><a title=\"Yoshi&#039;s Story\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Yoshi%27s_Story\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Yoshi&#8217;s Story<\/a><\/i>\u00a0due to the former&#8217;s simplicity in gameplay and construction, and the game shared some\u00a0<a title=\"Level (video games)\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Level_(video_games)#Level_design\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">level design<\/a>\u00a0staff with\u00a0<i><a title=\"Yoshi&#039;s Woolly World\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Yoshi%27s_Woolly_World\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Yoshi&#8217;s Woolly World<\/a><\/i>, which was developed concurrently.
